This paper presents results of deformation and seepage analyses of a number of large earthdams and a high concrete arch dam. The dams are all in Iran and under operation. The paper focuses on thebehaviors of the dams based on their monitoring results. The monitoring results are employed to interpret thehydro-geotechnical behavior of the dams, mostly during their construction and first impounding. Numericalmodeling and analyses have been carried out for all of the dams. Selective results of the numerical analysesare compiled and compared occasionally with the due data acquired from monitoring of the dams. Deformationsof the dams, arching ratio, and pore water pressure ratio in core of the earth dams are thoroughly studied. Also the paper briefly suggests major challenges involved in dam engineering and related researches. Thechallenges are categorized as: material-related challenges, instrumentation and monitoring-related challengesand numerical modeling and analysis- related challenges.
