The lubricant on the piston and liner is subject to severe conditions during engine operation. Compositional differences are created between the lubricant in this region and the oil in the sump due to complex mixing and transport phenomenon, coupled with degradation and contamination. Several studies have measured the composition of the oil on the piston and liner, however, the sampling methods that were used alter the flows and residency time in the region. An in-situ method for real time monitoring of lubricant composition at the piston and liner interface will improve the accuracy of measurements and allow for a more complete understanding of chemical changes in the region.
