Over thirty years ago, UV absorbers were often used as the primary light stabilizer for polyolefins. When hindered amines were first commercialized in the 1970's, they quickly displaced UVA's as the preferred polyolefin UV stabilizer. Since then, many investigators have evaluated combinations of UVAs and HALS with varying results. In this paper, we will examine the effect of combinations of these two main light stabilizer classes and their effect on polymer properties in various olefinic materials with and without pigment. Examples in polyethylene, polypropylene and TPO substrates are presented.
