High temperature resins are frequently used in demanding applications where severe environments are encountered during processing as well as end use situations. In addition, a number of agency requirements can be placed on the material. For such materials, colorant selection and evaluation is a sometimes tedious, but critical function in the development of a new product. The most obvious criterion a colorant must meet is thermal stability at the plastics' high processing temperatures. Additional colorant properties, interactions with other additives, regulatory approvals, price, and dispersion characteristics must also be assessed. This paper will review these challenges from a resin supplier's perspective.
