The silica-calcium phosphate nano composite is characterized by a nano porous structure which provided high surface area for drug loading and allowed for sustained release profile. The release kinetics of gentamicin from the surface of the SCPC nano composite was modulated by material dissolution and the deposition of a hydroxyapatite layer on the material surface after immersion in SBF. The released gentamicin was highly effective in inhibiting theStaphylococcus aureusin vitro. Combining the sustained antibiotic release with the osteoconductive and resorbability properties, the porous silica calcium phosphate nano composite can provide a two-fold beneficial effect: the scaffold will provide a targeted treatment of the disease and at the same time will stimulate bone regeneration.
