Hofmann et al. demonstrated that nine months is necessary for adequate human cancellous bone ingrowth into porous coated implants. Understanding how the distribution of mineralized and osteoid area are related to bone remodeling and bone ingrowth at the bone-implant interface is essential in achieving consistent skeletal attachment of porous coated implants. The null hypothesis was there will be no significant correlation between mineralized bone area, osteoid area, bone remodeling, and bone ingrowth at the porous coated interface after six, twelve, and twenty-four weeks in a sheep model.
