Aseptic loosening (AL) is the most common cause of implant failure. Implant wear- induced macrophage activation and recruitment to periprosthetic tissue has been proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of AL. The purpose of this study was to determine whether treatment with clodronate liposomes (CL2MDP), which causes macrophage depletion, diminishes ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) particle- induced inflammatory osteolysis in a mouse osteolysis model.
