The results indicate that pyrocarbon may provide a chondro-protective surface compared to Co-Cr for reconstruction devices that articulate against cartilage. FEA model had contact stresses at the tibia surface that were consistent with that expected for the intact canine stifle and showed that a PyC implant can reduce the contact stresses on the opposing tibial surface compared to Co-Cr. The reduction of contact stress may have resulted in decreased histologically apparent degenerative changes and increased longevity of the opposing cartilage.
