As belts have improved, tensions have gotten higher, while pulley diameters have gotten smaller. Combining this with increasing belt speed means that pulleys are seeing more and more cycles each year. To the average user, pulley life is determined in years, not cycles. While the pulley life may actually be longer, the calendar time could be shorter. In the past ten years advancements have made it possible to predict pulley life. To date this involves FEA and a statistical pulley life program. Both programs require major computer power and Engineers to interpret them. This chapter focuses on the development of a simple algebraic formula to approximate pulley life, so that the user can determine what level of service is required.
