Pigment on phosphor surface could improve purity of color and contrast by suppressing reflectance of ambient light and emission of unnecessary side peak. In this study, Y_2O_3: Eu red phosphor was surface treated to coat α-Fe_2O_3 pigment by two different methods. One was adsorption of α-Fe_2O_3 submicro-particles and the other was coating by precipitation of Fe(NO_3)_3 or FeSO_4 precursor solution. The phosphors treated both by adsorption and precipitation method showed decreasing luminescent intensity with the increasing amount of α -Fe_2O_3. The phosphor treated by adsorption method, however, exhibited much less dependency to the applied voltage. Surface treatment by precipitation resulted in much faster decrease of luminescent intensity with lowering of applied voltage, indicating more homogeneous coating of α -Fe_2O_3 pigment.
