The efficiency of conventional AC Plasma Display Panels is still rather low, on the order of 1 Im/W. Improvements must be made in the efficiency of UV photon production by the discharge, in the efficiency of photon conversion by the phosphors and in the photon collection efficiency. In this paper we show that discharge excitation at high frequency, in the 50 MHz range, can increase considerably the efficiency of the discharge in producing UV photons in a neon-xenon mixture. In such "RF PDPs", writing and erasing could be achieved with square wave voltages as in AC PDPs, while a low RF voltage would be used for sustaining. The principles of the RF PDP are described in the paper by Kang et al., in these proceedings.
