High luminance multicolor emitting TFEL devices have been newly developed using a (Y_2O_3-Al_2o_3):Mn, a (Y_2O_3-Ga_2o_3):Mn, a (Y_2O_3-SiO_2):Mn or a (Y_2O_3-GeO_2):Mn oxide phosphor thin film and a thick BaTiO_3 ceramic insulator. In all TFEL devices using these Y_2O_3-binary compound systems, the maximum luminance was always obtained with an Y_2O_3 content of 50 mol.%. A luminance of 210 cd/m~2 for yellow, 11.8 cd/m~2 for green, 91 cd/m~2 for yellow and 785 cd/m~2 for yellow emission was obtained in a Mn-activated YAlO_3, YGaO_3, Y_2SiO_5 and Y_2GeO_5 TFEL device, respectively, driven by a sinusoidal wave voltage at 1 kHz.
