Underground test program for the yucca mountain, nevada potential high-level waste repository site

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has developed a site characterization testing program to acquire the information needed to address the technical issues associated with determining the suitability of the Yucca Mountain, Nevada site for development of a high-level waste repository. The United states Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) developed regulatory requirements that the DOE must satisfy before a nuclear repository can be developed. There are technical requirements, primarily performance objectives and design criteria, that are the basis for assessing the suitability of the site for development of a repository. Plans to acquire the information needed to address these technical requuirements were compiled in a Site Characterization Plan that was reviewed by the NRC.
