Building a Computer Lab that Students Will Love;Internet Cafés and Design Studios

What makes a computer lab a desirable space for students? Is itrnpossible or desirable to tailor the layout and services in arncomputing facility in such a way that students enjoy working inrnthe room? Colorado State University engineering students havernresponded very favorably to both the Design Studio and InternetrnCafé that were built to provide both a general-purpose computerrn"lab" and a specialized atmosphere. Discussion focuses onrntargeting the purpose for a new or existing facility and thernresulting layout, design, and technology needs that depend on thernservices desired by students. The goal is to provide the audiencernwith an excellent groundwork for considering the best use of bothrncurrent and future computing facilities with a strong focus onrnproviding excellent service to students.
