Window to a New World:Online Freshman Orientation via Portal

In June 2003, Lehigh University embarked on an experiment tornpresent incoming freshmen with an online pre-orientationrnexperience using the SCT Luminis 3 Portal environment. Threernmain content areas were developed: targeted information aboutrnthe student’s college/program area, a customized course selectionrntool, and an online Calculus-readiness test integrated with thernBlackboard course management system. The goal of this projectrnwas to replace the three-day, on-campus pre-orientation programrnheld in July each year, and to introduce the incoming students tornthe MyLehigh Portal. This paper will present an overview of therncontent areas developed and deployed, the results of a studentrnsatisfaction survey developed to gauge response to this preorientationrnexperience, and thoughts on how to improve thernprocess for the future.
