Searching for the Needle in the Haystack: Taxonomies,Tags and Targets

The Penn State Taxonomic Tags group, with representatives fromrnInformation Technology, Business Administration, and the PennrnState Libraries, was formed to examine whether a taxonomic setrnof tags, systematically applied across the university’s Web pages,rncould (a) make finding specific pages easier from among thernUniversity’s greater than 500,000 Web pages, (b) simplify Webrncontent management tasks and (c) prove useful over time asrnsearch engines continue to evolve and despite whether openrnsource or commercial (and often, proprietary) search algorithmsrnare employed. The University has had broad experience withrnseveral search engines, and currently holds a University-widernlicense for the Google Appliance. The Tags Group has developedrnrecommendations that it believes will address issues found in therncurrent environment and yet remain useful during and after whatrnit expects will be the increasing adoption of Content ManagementrnSystems across Penn State University.
