Pluorescent lamp phosphors are in general based on oxidic host lattices and are synthesized by solid state reaction at temperatures ranging from 1000 to 1600 deg C. Keeping the activator ions in the desired oxidation state often requires a protective-neutral or reducing-atmosphere during firing. The final steps in production are milling and washing to achieve the fine free-flowing powder necessary for lamp manufacture. But despite the fact that the synthesis always includes a high temperature firing, wet chemistry plays an important role too, e.g. in the preparation of starting materials. This has become increasingly important with the introduction of rare earth activated phosphors. The large trivalent rare earth ions do not diffuse easily in a crystal lattice so a wet chemical step is helpful in creating a uniorm distribution of the activators.
