Recently, an optical configuration of a non-twisted quarter-wave cell that can provide high contrast without using a wide-band film was proposed for a single-polarizer reflective LCD. However, its fabrication with currently available LC materials requires a very small cell gap, which may make its mass production difficult. In this work, the proposed configuration is realized by using a hybrid aligned LC layer at a cell gap twice larger than that of a LC cell with the homogeneously aligned state.
