The strenght and durability of bonded joints are becoming extremely important for improving the life and durability of the product in its service life. It is believed that surface conditions at the joint provide a significant improvement to the performance of the Adhesive bond. In addition, previous work also suggests that siloxanes on metal surfaces change surface characteristics and provide modification. This paper will discuss the importance of aluminium surfaces, and will provide initial findings related to the modification of aluminium surfaces to obtain improved strenght in bonded joints. Surfaces have been treated by abrading siloxanes onto metal surfaces, and bond strenghts measured by shear tests. Results show that there is a significant effect on lap-shear bond strenght when metal surfaces have been simply abraded, also when metal surfaces were treated with siloxanes alone before bonding. However, the most noticeable improvement was found when metal surfaces had been abraded in the presence of siloxanes. In particular, treatments using polyether siloxanes showed a remarkable increase in bond strenght. Early results of durability of bonds under extreme conditions are also reported and discussed.
