The Egyptian black sands deposits comprise huge reserves of six economic heavy minerals: ilmenite, magnetite, garnet, zircon, rutile and monazite. The ilmenite sand concentrate is composed of ilmenite and its alteration products. A mixture of altered phases is present in some single grains. Description of the phases, their corresponding chemical compositions, textural relationships, fractures and pores as well as minor constituents are discussed. Electron microprobe, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analyses were carried out for the investigation of qualitative and quantitative mineralogical composition of the Egyptian sand ilmenite concentrate.
