A study of some reverse engineering software

There are many commercially available software packages for reverse engineering (RE) purposes. They are very different in their capacity and performance, so it is not easy to find the right software for the job. There is considerable overselling of software capabilities and benefits, leading to quite a few companies having unsatisfactory experiences with such software. Some packages have a restricted capability, especially in fitting a surface via point cloud. This paper seeks to evaluate the capability of some packages to create 3D CAD models with sharp textured, free-form surfaces as an accurate representation of the physical part. The benchmarks used in assessing the software are considered and explained. The results allow us to compare the advantages and applicability of the packages. This paper will help users in selecting the right package and product developers in improving their products.
