This paper introduces a new methodology developedrnthrough CIGRE Working Group 15.11 to investigaternservice aged insulation. In contrast to the usualrnapproach through accelerated ageing of new specimensrnin the laboratory this approach starts from aged orrnfailed equipment. A structured methodology is derivedrnto link the evidence obtained from forensic studies ofrnfailed plant with the theoretical failure modes developedrnfrom laboratory studies. A range of practical optionsrnemerges for managing ageing plant, including the mostrnappropriate diagnostic methods. Associated laboratoryrnwork at the University of NSW using partial dischargernrecognition techniques on the ageing of stator windingrninsulation is also described.
