The retrieval of water constituents in the coastal zonernconsists of several pre-processing and processing stepsrndue to the optically complex environment. Such coastalrnprocessing comprises the classification of pixels and flagging,rnthe geometric correction, the atmopheric correctionrnincluding a previous adjacency effect correction, and finallyrnthe in-water retrieval taking into account regionalrnspecific inherent optical properties. In this paper there isrna detailed description of the coastal pre- and processingrnchain that Brockmann Consult applies to MERIS data.rnThis approach is transferable to MODIS and in the futurerncan be adapted to OLCI data, with instrument specificrnmodifications.
