MERMAID AND ODESA: COMPLEMENTARY MARINE BIO-OPTICAL PROCESSING AND VALIDATION FACILITIES MERMAID

MERMAID and ODESA are two freely availablernfacilities for validation and development of marine bioopticalrnalgorithms for MERIS and the future ESArnoptical sensors on board Sentinel 3. MERMAIDrnis a database of bioopticalrnmatch-ups, i.e. concurrent in-situ and Earth-rnObservation data, developed in collaboration withrnPrincipal Investigators protected by a strict datarnownership policy. It is continuously updated andrncurrently comprises more than 30 sites or missionsrnworldwide. A long-term effort is made to ensure reliablernsource of data, including a detailed documentation ofrnthe protocols, sanity and quality checks of the datasetsrnand further processings to best match the satellite data.rnThe match-up facility initiated in 2007 is currentlyrnevolving to handle other sensors and products. Inrnparallel, ODESA is arncomplete Level 2 processing environment comprisingrntoday the source code of the ESA 3rd MERISrnreprocessing for algorithm development. The softwarernprovides a MERMAID processing mode, offering bioopticalrnmodellers an immediate validation of newrnalgorithms against data of known quality and in arnperfectly controlled configuration.
