During October 1998 the NEXUS (The Network of Excellence in Multifunctional Microsystems) task force published their first Market Analysis for Microsystems, covering the period 1996-2002. The study estimated a projected market growth, directly attributed to this field of technology, from $ 14 billion at that time to 38 billion by the year 2002. This estimate differed, markedly, from other contemporary market studies due, primarily, to a NEXUS specific definition that included all products that are microstructure in design including monolithic and hybrid components and silicon-based devices as well as micromachined products fabricated in plastics or metals.
