For the protection of drinking water from toxic contaminants, reliable and accurate monitoring is necessary. Current monitoring methods are expensive and time-intensive. Most of the existing monitoring technologies are off-site which require manual collection of water samples, transport, storage and exhaustive laboratory analysis that take usually several days. Therefore, for precise, inexpensive on site or in-situ monitoring of environmental contaminants special biosensors should be designed and manufactured. ATR (Attenuated Total Reflectance) infrared spectroscopy can determine inorganic molecules because of their chemical bonds vibrating on specific energy levels corresponding to wave numbers. The wave numbers correlate with the molecules; the peak areas with their concentration levels.
