Since the author presented this paper in November 1999 the complex subject of Gateways for Automotive Multiplex Systems has developed considerably in response to new services, features and ways of doing things in the car. This is nowhere more apparent than in the theatre of the new "Telematics" and Web-based services which are bringing nothing short of a communications revolution to the motor car. The treatment of Gateways in this paper reflected some of the views prevailing at the time of its writing but could not address the huge changes that have occurred since. None of the recent developments make the paper less relevant, or wrong, quite the opposite in fact, as the mushrooming of data flow demands make a considered approach even more crucial. A resision of the paper to take into account these exciting new developments would constitute so complete a rewriting that, through tempting, it has not been attempted for the reprinting in this volume and the paper is offered again in its original form, though such a rewriting cannot be put off for much longer.
