Generator motor air cooler improvements within hydroelectric power generation

Edison Mission Energy own and operate Ffestiniog and Dinorwig pumped storage power stations with a combined output of 2200MW. After 15 years of operation at Dinorwig power station, the existing spiral wound generator motor heat exchangers had degenerated due to a mix of stress corrosion and fatigue at the tube plates. Renewal of the heat exchangers has not only improved the design but has increased the thermal transfer rates and consequently reduced the generator temperatures.
