摘要

Fretting fatugue poses is a vexing source of failure in many contacting systems(1,2). The details of fretting, however, are poorly understood and offer a new frontier for fatigue research. Several exciting developments have recently emerged (3-5) that combine novel experimental methods with detailed numerical calculations. The work of Farris and Sakagami (3-5) has provided a new paradigm for investigating fretting contacts and fretting fatigue. The present work expands upon the pioneering work of Sakagami and Farris by exploring direct measurements of slip zones in a model plane stress sample geometry. The proposed method aims to provide fundamental experiments that can be used to develop accurate models of slip zone mechanics.
