A new concept for a non-contact optical measurement of in-plane displacement field based on the analysis of the color image was introduced here. The main advantage of this approach is the reduced computational effort since no correlation procedure was used. The initial color pattern may be generated by a number of algorithms and is applied to the surface. After application of the load, the deformed pattern is recorded. Comparison of both patterns allows the determination of the displacement of any pixel. It is assumed that the deformation does not change significantly the color pattern of each individual pixel. The numerical simulations and limited experimental data suggest that this approach may be used for analysis of strain.
