Structural landscaping in a recreational park sited on a mining waste dump in Bierun Nowy (Upper Silesia)

This study is an attempt to address matters associated with the proposal to create a new element in the municipal green belt system of Bierun Stary and Bierun Nowy. Former documents developed by the authors of the present study considered a proposal for the creation of a park near the medieval dyke (Grobla) in Bierun and the area around the "Lysina" reservoir. As in the case of the Grobla area study, this analysis demonstrated the exceptional historical value of the area, which constituted an industrial relic of over 500 years of engineering. In the case of the "Lysina" lake, a particularly interesting phenomenon of 'returning to the wild' (in the sense of a very strong succession of natural growth on a former industrial site) of the proposed area has been documented. The site referred to as "The beads" is proposed as the future location of a nature park. Thus, artificial landscaping of this area will contribute to its site-specific values in terms of tradition, established methodologies and the theory of landscape architecture (Bogdanowski 1976).
