In melon (Melo sativus Sager.) seedlings exposed to UV-B (280-320 nm, 18.3 kJ m~(-2) h~(-1), 5-90 min) the presence of adventitious roots at hypocotyl was related to the dose of UV-B radiation. The formation of adventitious roots was correlated to the damaging of root system. The UV-B-induced changes in ethylene production and carbon dioxide exchange were established. The role of ethylene in the adaptation to the UV-B light was demonstrated. It is concluded that the mode of action of UV-B may be via production of ethylene.
