The field investigation done in less than three days as a quick performance test demonstrated the potential of the Membrane Interface Probe. However MIP logs are to be compared with care as parameters such as the temperature of the probe, the soil moisture content, soil porosity, carrier gas flow rate, detector stability and the relative solubility of the contaminant may have an influence on the results. Sampling and analysis still need to be conducted to confirm the evidence of contamination and to correlate the logs to the model. But the Membrane Interface Probe system must be seen as a decision tool for the optimization for sampling campaigns. The attempts of identifying local contaminants brought promising results as the major local contaminants were identified in situ. Improvements of the speciation technique could include the addition of a purge & trap system and/or a larger volume of aliquot deviated.
