Owing to their hazardous potential and their wide distribution in the environment, petroleum hydrocarbons (PH's) and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC's) are playing an important role in environmental analysis. With LIF spectroscopy in combination with fiber optical sensors fast and sensitive on site and in situ measurements of these compounds are possible. Optimare GmbH and the University of Potsdam have developed a mobile LIF-system (OPTIMOS) for the on site and in situ analysis of PH's and PAC's in waters and soils. In cooperation with Geosond GmbH, a probe for the combination of LIF-measurements and cone penetration testing (LIF/CPT-probe) has been developed for subsurface LIF-measurements. The OPTIMOS and the LIF/CPT-probe have been characterized in laboratory and field investigations.
