The Hydrogen Energy Centre, Banaras Hindu University has been carrying out R&Dand commercialization effort in Hydrogen Fueled Vehicle, particularly two wheeler, formore than a decade now. Our effort on "Hydrogen Fueled two wheeler vehicle" hasbeen applauded (IJHE, 2004). We have successfully designed and developed five twowheeler vehicles, which are run on hydrogen fuel. The hydrogen fuel is supplied viahydride storage tank, that is located below the seat. The development incorporates theR&D efforts on (a) Development of viable storage alloys. Both AB5 (MmNi5 type) andAB2 (ZrFe1-xCrx) and completely new hydrogen storage materials such as compositematerials (e.g. Mg-xwt.% MmNi5-xFex) and graphitic nanofibres and complex hydride(e.g. NaAlH4) have been investigated. (b) Optimization of IC Engine for Hydrogen Fuel.For this we have developed viable hydrogen injection technique. Optimization of otherhydrogen fueled engine parameters such as compression ratio has also been done. Someof the storage materials have been prepared in large quantities and tested in thehydrogen fueled vehicle (two wheeler). The present vehicle range is about 70 kms. Andis shortly to be enhanced further.
