Federal Transit Administration’s Noise and Vibration Guidance Manual – Updated after 10 Years of Experience

In April 1995, the Federal Transit Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportationissued its guidance manual, “Transit Noise and Vibration Impact Assessment.” The manual waswritten to provide direction for the preparation of noise and vibration sections of environmentaldocuments for public transportation projects in the interest of promoting quality and uniformityin assessments. In the ten years since its release, the guidance manual has been used as the basisof noise and vibration assessments in over 80 environmental documents and has been usedworldwide as a standard method for performing transit noise analyses. An updated version hasrecently been prepared that takes account of improvements in tools, changes in theenvironmental assessment procedures, modifications of impact criteria, and experience withcosting mitigation measures.
