The impact of psychoacoustic descriptors on the perceived effectiveness of ANC systemshas been presented using loudness as the critical metric for system design. It has beendemonstrated that reductions in A-weighted SPL, an entrenched industrial noise controlobjective, is not sufficient to ensure that the affected human observers will agree that thenoise control system is effective. This lack of correlation between dB(A) levels andloudness has been well-documented by the psychoacoustic research community but hasreceived very little attention, if any, by the ANC research community. A simple designexample has demonstrated that the inclusion of ANC in an acoustic silencing programshould be examined in the context of loudness reductions if human observers willultimately make judgments about the noise control effectiveness.
