Generator set tones in offices: A tale of two buildings.

Diesel engine powered generator sets are in part, tonal sound sources. These generator sets, when used for backup or peak shaving electrical power in office buildings, can sometimes create tones that cause annoying background noise enhanced by building responses, even when the generator sets are installed external to the building and fully treated with enclosures, high quality exhaust mufflers, air inlet and outlet ducts and resilient mounting systems. This paper presents two case histories of generator sets creating annoying tones in office buildings, examines their similarities and differences and shows what was done to alleviate the problem.
