The current Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) standard applied to water-cooled chillers, AHRI Standard 575, is a method of test only. This standard is one of the oldest AHRI standards and was developed for use in hearing exposure evaluations and equipment room noise mitigation. AHRI Standard 575 does not have provisions for rating equipment sound. A new standard, AHRI Standard 1280P, is under development. Itt provides sound power ratings for water-cooled chillers. AHRI Standard 1280P allows the use of three equivalent methods for the development of the rating: reverberation room testing, acoustic intensity testing and free-field over a reflecting plane testing. This paper will highlight the development of this standard and review the measurement methods developed with particular emphasis on the free-field over a reflecting plane method.
