This paper discusses the development of a new vibration isolation system for tunnelcrossovers in a future rail line extension. The previous design included ballasted track ontop of continuous concrete slabs on rubber vibration isolators. The goal of the new designwas to replace the ballast and tie track with rails fastened directly to discrete slabs similarto the vibration isolation system utilized on running portions of track within existingtunnels. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to evaluate the dynamic interactionbetween the vehicle, rails, resilient rail fasteners and the vibration isolation system. Theresults of the analyses guided the design in determining the size and thickness of theconcrete slabs, the stiffness and design of the rubber vibration isolation pads and the railfastener selection.
