The past ten years of tire-pavement noise research

Since the publication of Ulf Sandberg and Jerzy A. Ejsmont’s Tyre/Road Noise Reference Book in 2002, there have been significant advances in tire-pavement noise research. There have been advances in the understanding of noise generation mechanisms, changes in measurement techniques and standards, and new ways of modeling and predicting tire-pavement noise. Additionally, improved design and construction techniques have produced some of the quietest roadways ever constructed. This paper is a review of the last ten years of tire-pavement noise research. The various generation mechanisms of noise are discussed, including recent developments on how knowledge of these mechanisms can lead to more accurate predictions. Tire-pavement noise measurement techniques are discussed, including laboratory and field tests and relevant standards. Recent work on the effect of pavement and tire parameters on noise is presented, along with analytical and statistical models to predict noise from input parameters. Finally, a survey of common and prototype road surfaces is presented with a focus on the benefits and drawbacks of each surface.
