In this paper, the analytical design of a feedback control systemnfor achieving noninteraction between a finite number of modes ofndeformable mirrors corresponding to an arbitrary orthonormal basis fornthe solution space is considered. In this system, each mode can benmanipulated independently without affecting the remaining modes.nParticular attention is focused on circular deformable mirrors whosenmodal representation is expressed in terms of Zernike polynomials. Thus,nvarious types of aberrations such as coma, defocus, astigmatism, andndistortion can be manipulated independently. Specific results arenobtained for a micromachined circular mirror with electrostaticnactuators based on a membrane model. Only static noninteracting feedbackncontrol system is considered. The paper concludes with a discussion ofnthe physical Implementation of the proposed modal noninteracting controlnsystem
