Countdown to GMDSS - One Year to Go

I am very pleased to make a presentation at the 1998 RTCM Assembly for several reasons. I spent much of my Coast Guard career dealing with maritime safety communications and since retirement have worked in allied fields which included participation as a member of the U.S. delegation to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Radiocommunications Subcommittee which formulated the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). GMDSS is certainly a watershed event in maritime telecommunications and this is an appropriate time to review the status with only 8 months remaining until the 1 February 1999 compliance date.
