Nato questionnaire: correlation between ship motions, fatigue, sea sickness and naval task performance

The NATO Fatigue, Sea Sickness and Human Performance Assessment Questionnaire (PAQ) was developed to acquire a large database on fatigue, motion sickness and task performance problems, associated with ship motions. The PAQ was administered on seven NATO frigates during two weeks of combat training exercises, in the winter North Atlantic. More than 1,000 PAQ booklets were completed, representing over 16,000 individual completions of the 47-item PAQ. Also, two of the seven ships were instrumented to measure ship motions. The types and severity of reported problems with sleep, fatigue, motion sickness and task performance are examined, and correlations are discussed.
