A MONITORING NETWORK FOR ST. VITALE IN RAVENNA

St. Vitale, a very well preserved byzantine basilica, is the object of this study. The special features of the building: central plan and articulated volumes including columns, piers, arches and vaults, a light dome made with clay tubes, large bricks and thick mortar joints, stimulate a careful approach for the preservation and conservation. The methodology adopted for the survey is described and the results obtained in the first two years of monitoring are shortly presented with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of the structural behavior of such an important monument.
