The paper presents the results of a testing programme to examine the possibility of using crushed clay bricks as aggregate in bituminous mixtures. A series of preliminary tests were carried out on two brick aggregates crushed from unused bricks, one recycled brick aggregate (RBA) and one version aggregate (granite) to determine and compare properties. The granite aggregate was chosen to compare results because of past uses proved that this type of version aggregate produces good quality asphalt concrete (AC). The aggregates selected for this investigation were then used to make AC specimens, which were tested to determine their physical and mechanical properties. The results derived from this investigation showed that AC specimens prepared using aggregates crushed from unused clay and recycled bricks outperformed specimens made with granite aggregate. This is because of the high porosity and roughness of the surfaces of crushed clay brick aggregates, which has the ability to absorb more bitumen and provide better bonding in AC. On top of that using recycled brick aggregate has many environment benefits, which make them a suitable alternative aggregate for use in road construction.
