The purpose of this article is the introduction of a method aimed at minimising heating expenses by takingrnadvantage of solar energy in residential buildings. Heating of residential buildings accounts for a considerablernportion of the overall energy consumption in Turkey. The fact however that the energy sources used forrnheating are limited and not renewable, leads to increasing costs and furthermore contributes to the pollution ofrnthe environment. In addition to that, the energy crisis which has hit the country over the last few years hasrnforced Turkey to make the effective and efficient use of natural energy resources a priority. As an energyrnsource, which requires no production costs, solar energy comes to mind. Due to its geographical position,rnTurkey disposes of an important potential for solar energy. However, this potential is not being usedrnsufficiently. The design of buildings with a minimum requirement of heating energy through optimal use ofrnsolar energy will, however, only then afford the most efficient solution if standards and regulations are putrninto force which take account of all aspects of the problem. The regulation on heating energy conservation,rnwhich came into force in Turkey in 2000, is based on calculation methods containing incomplete andrninsufficient data, and completely disregards the solar energy potential. Therefore, this paper aims atrnexamining the method of calculation of the new regulation on heating energy conservation, and proposes anrnadvanced method of calculation which takes account of the deficiencies and insufficiencies of the appliedrnmethod.
