摘要

Unfortunately only rudimentary information about the construction and calculation of water wheels from thernpast are handed down to the posterity. For this reason it makes sense to present a modern kind of physicalrnand mathematical analysis of water wheels. Aim of this paper is to present the fundamental principles for thernconstruction and optimisation of water wheels in a new physical-mathematical way with respect to modernrnmechanical engineering. This includes all three main types of water wheels as they are under shot, middlernshot and over shot water wheels.
