This paper presents an investigation of the model error uncertainty in the design code provisions for circular CFT stub columns. The study covers the national building codes of Japan (AIJ, 1997), United States (AISC, 2005) and China (DL/T, 1999), and the transnational EUROCODE 4 (EU4, 2004). The study is based on experimental results of 250 axially loaded concrete-filled tubular steel stub columns published in the literature. The error of resistance models is determined by comparing experimental results for ultimate loads with code-predicted column resistances. The usual method for determining the distribution of a random variable, i.e., to fit a candidate distribution to the histogram of available statistical data of the variable and perform approximate goodness-of-fit tests is used to determine the probability distributions of the model er ror. From the investigation of the present paper, it is found that the model error random variables are suitable to be fitted by normal or lognormal distributions.
