Y. Yu and Y. Hu have ever estimated the long-period displacement response spectrum of ground motion using estimated amplification rate and considering the definition of magnitude. Based on their research, the concept of amplification rate of wave package (ARWP) is proposed in this paper to better describe the amplification effect of ground motion displacement, and the characteristics of the ARWP is studied using the acceleration records obtained from the main shock of Chi-Chi earthquake, 1999, Taiwan, China. It can be concluded that: (1) the longer the period, the smaller the ARWP; (2)given the same site conditions, the farther away from the fault, the greater the long period spectrum of the ARWP; (3) given the same distance from the fault, the softer the site, the smaller the long period spectrum of the ARWP.
